On Pillar, each person on your team has a single role within the company. The role decides which sections they can access, which data they can see and which actions they can perform.
The four roles at a glance
Role | In one sentence |
Owner | Sees and manages everything, is the only one who can manage company users' accounts |
Administrator | Like the Owner, but does not manage company users |
Worker | Works on construction sites and reads their invoices, does not see the company accounting section |
Technician | Works only on construction sites, sees neither construction site invoices nor the company accounting section |
What each role can do
Owner
It's the role with full access. The Owner can:
Manage the team: invite new people, change their role, remove them
See and edit all construction sites (create, update, delete)
See invoices received from suppliers and those issued to clients, along with their due dates
See and edit transactions
Access the cashflow
Manage Bank accounts and Virtual accounts
Administrator
The Administrator is identical to the Owner except for one thing: they cannot manage the team. So:
Sees everything the Owner sees
Can create construction sites, manage invoices, accounts, transactions, cashflow
Cannot invite new members or change existing roles
Worker
It's the role designed for those who are operational in the field and need to see the status of the work and the invoices, but should not touch the company accounting side.
What they can do:
See and edit construction sites (including deleting them)
See construction site invoices (both received and issued)
What they cannot do:
Create new construction sites (they can edit existing ones, but not add new ones)
See bank accounts, transactions, cashflow and virtual accounts
Manage the team
Open the Transactions tab within a construction site
Technician
It's the most limited role, designed for professionals such as surveyors or designers, who need to work on construction sites but do not need to access administrative data.
What they can do:
See, create, edit and delete construction sites
What they cannot do:
See invoices, accounts, transactions, cashflow
Manage the team
Frequently asked questions
Can I assign multiple roles to the same person?
No, within a single company each user has a single role. If the same person collaborates with multiple companies, they can have different roles in each one.
Who can change a team member's role?
Only the Owner. The Administrator does not have this permission, even though they have all the others.
What happens if a Worker tries to open a page they're not allowed to?
The unfiltered menu items remain clickable, but the page will show a message indicating that they don't have access to that information. Sensitive data is protected anyway, so it's not possible to bypass the controls.
Can I create a custom role (for example, a Technician who also sees invoices)?
Not at the moment: the four available roles are fixed and the permissions are predefined. If you have a specific need, write to us in the chat: feedback helps us understand how to evolve the role system.
